THE VAGABOND COLLECTIVES 2010 SAMPLER

This sampler is put together by us, the faces behind the Vagabond Collective. It is filled with our favorite bands, our best friends, and our family. These 10 songs are what we jammed the most in the past year and each article explains why.  Please take your time to check it out and spread the word. You can download sampler at the following link for free. It has each song on it.

We would also like to take this time to thank everyone who has been apart of Vagabond success in 2010. You guys have all helped us so much and we cant thank you enough. That being said thanks so much to Transmission Entertainment, Graham William, Rosa Madriz, The Mohawk, Red 7, Sanctuary Printshop, Build A Sign, and every single person who has came to one o our shows. You are all a vital part of Vagabond.

                                                      FOR HOURS AND OURS

                                                                 “Dirty Beige”

One of the most crowd pleasing bands of 2010 was the five piece ambient punk band For Hours and Ours. If there is one group that Austin music listeners need to be warned about blowing up in 2011 it is them. The five have a contagious way of getting crowds to dance even if they’re getting their FHAO cherry popped. The groups songs make sweet love to the listeners ears with energetic horns, rapidly beat drums, distorted guitars, and ambient dance breakdowns. With one of the most enjoyable live sets around town they are bound for big things in this upcoming year. This song, nay, the bands whole vinyl has been an anthem to Vagabonds 2010 season.

                                                      THE FRONTIER BROTHERS

                                                           “You Should Start a Band”

The Frontier Brothers are rowdy as fuck and classy as hell. Their songs are synth powered, heart on your sleeve, rock spectacles fit to soundtrack bar room brawls across america and special built for fist pumping and dancing up storms. “You Should Start A Band” is the first step towards a new sound for the band that incorporates the raw doo wop space rock of their debut with more synth and catchy sing along choruses. Never ones to take themselves too seriously ( with awesome song titles like burning panties and a music video that has bear fights aplenty) the Frontier Brothers hit just the right spot for intellectuals who like to party and get in trouble.

                                                            MARMALAKES

                                                                    ”Victoria”

I overheard people talking at the back of a Marmalakes show, new fans who might’ve stumbled into the audience immediately blown away by the raw emotional highs, musical precision and spontaneity of one of Austin’s best bands. “Who are these guys? They’re really fucking good”, a sentiment echoed by an ever growing fan-base in Austin. Folk pop with highs and lows, one thing Marmalakes never comes close to is boring. They are expects at building mood and power and even more skilled at delivering a roaring chorus as exemplified in one of the years best songs “Victoria”. Seeing them live with an audience completely in their grasp is something truly special and unique.

                                                            THE EASTERN SEA

                                                                    ”The Name”

I’ve never seen an easy listening outfit get a crowd moving as much as the first time i saw The Eastern Sea. The band will have fans relaxing, needing a comfy bed and a warm blanket with songs like, ‘The Mountain’, then with a snap of a finger, the group will have crowds tightening their dance shows with tracks like ‘The Name’. Their sound brings a unique taste to the Austin music scene as they incorporate instruments such as the violin and the trumpet. Guitarist Tomas Olano, and frontman Matt Hines will get the audience into each song with their terrific participation with the crowd. These four musicians are rapidly gaining one of the best reputations around town and show no sign of slowing down. Be on the look out for their full length that they are hard at work on right now, i’m sure it is a guaranteed disc of delight.

                                                                 LITTLE LO

                                                                    ”Room”

It is hard not to fall in love with the six piece known as Little Lo. The groups faces may be fresh to the Austin music scene, however their fan base grows with each show as their songs and sets are constructed with intriguing lyrics and fun youthful sing a longs. 2010 was a great year for the band and I’m sure 2011 will fall nothing short of amazing for them.

                                                               THE ROCKETBOYS

                                                                    ”Brothers”

The five piece indie ambient band The Rocketboys build songs with charming vocals, well written lyrics, and impeccable instruments. The group easily gets crowds singing, swaying, and slow dancing. It is hard to beat the bands live set as it sounds as phenomenal as the recorded versions. If you haven’t seen them live yet you don’t know what your missing.

                                                                     SPHYNX

                                                                    ”Razberry Wine”

While a whole generation of bands ran away from the label of pop music, local Synth rock band Sphynx considers it an honor to be labeled as such. Devout pop worshipers of the old and new school ( Lady Gaga covers aren’t something unexpected for the band) they mix indie rock influences with electronic hooks and catchy courses to make music that is firmly rooted in the here and now. “Razberry Wine” is sleazy and romantic at the same time, unabashed pop excess perfectly bottled up. Its falsetto and synth lines float on a new wave tide making it impossible not to like.

                                                                         SIP SIP

                                                                  ”Continental Breakfast”

Even though Sip Sip started out as the deranged side project of Nick Gregg and other members of Mother Falcon, they are now firmly planted as one of Austin’s premiere party bands. The perfect foil to the dark, contemporary orchestration of Mother Falcon, Sip Sip is sweaty, exuberant, psych soul synth insanity. Their live shows consistently get the crowd worked into a hot frenzy.

Their first single “Continental Breakfast” is a club song for people who don’t go to clubs. It’s jazz horns and spastic synths perfectly complement the soaring vocals.

It takes a special kind of swagger to make a line like “I make girls so wet they turn into dust” work but Gregg pulls it off with equal parts confidence and sarcasm.

Never afraid of indulging in excess, Sip Sip is ferocious in its desire to keep the party alive.

                                                                     THIEVES

                                                                  ”Slo-Motion”

Thieves is a heart on your sleeve, inspirational pop punk four piece from austin Texas. Their songs are filled with exciting lyrics that stimulate kids to get off their asses and make something happen. The bands messages are extremely effective as their shows are filled with numerous kids pilling on top of each other chanting their lyrics. The quartet meshes fast nasally pop with heart stopping breakdowns. Their songs tell stories of love, life, and living to the fullest. The group carries one of the rowdiest fanbase with them as their live sets are filled with fling bodies, stolen mics, and hundreds of sweaty kids. In 2010 they have signed a record deal, shared the stage with countless legendary artists, and have even been banned from houses. The four are some of the most talented and dedicated musicians vagabond has ever seen and it is that very reason that makes Thieves one of our favorite artists of 2010.

                                                                 ZLAM DUNK

                                                                      ”Vice”

If you want to get rowdy as shit Zlam Dunk is the band for you. With their high energized live set it is guaranteed no single body in the crowd will be standing still. The group is a garage dance synth in your fucking face punk band that never leaves a crowd unpleased. Zlam Dunk concert goers must be warned, you need stamina, endurance, and must be willing to get nutz cause these 5 dudes tear shit up.

With Marmalakes hit debut EP ‘Wonder Winds’, we have personally been anxiously waiting to hear what they will come out with next. Needless to say, when their newest song met our ears, we were not disappointed at all. The trios newest song ‘The Adventures of Jubilant in Giggle City’ is interesting both musically and lyrically. The track is also fun and dancy. The band has it on their bandcamp for a free download. Be sure to download it and check it out!

                                                                        Thieves

                                                       ‘Lights On All The Houses’

                       http://thievestx.bandcamp.com/track/lights-on-all-the-houses

Just in time for the holidays is a Christmas carol titled ‘Lights on All the Houses’ by local pop-punk band Thieves. The tune contains the common style Thieves fans are used to, however, included in the song is a tasteful twist that will quickly get you into the holiday spirit. Towards the end of the song, vocalist Billy Canino’s voice is perfectly meshed together with the sounds of ringing church bells. The song can be found on the bands facebook, bandcamp, and myspace. Be sure to check it out!
